NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton sophomore Obi Toppin A-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Massachusetts freshman Tre Mitchell was selected as A-10 Rookie of the Week for the fourth consecutive week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Feb. 24 – March 1.
Toppin averaged 21.0 points and 9.5 rebounds as Dayton's two wins clinched the A-10 regular season championship. He shot .696 (16-of-23) from the field, .500 (3-for-6) from 3-point range, and .700 (7-of-10) free throws. He scored 19 at George Mason on Tuesday, and then on Friday's title-clinching win versus Davidson, had had 23 points with 12 rebounds, and made 10-of-11 (.909) shots from the field, 3-of-4. He also had four assists versus the Wildcats. During the Davidson game, the forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., surpassed Chris Wright's Dayton career record for dunks. Toppin now has 179 dunks in 62 games and needs four to reach 100 this season.
Mitchell averaged 18.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game and shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor in two games last week. He had 19 points and 15 rebounds against VCU on Wednesday for his third double-double in the last four games, leading UMass to its first win over VCU since 2016. The center from Pittsburgh followed that up with an 18-point, seven-rebound night at Richmond to bring himself within six field goals of tying the UMass freshman record for made field goals in a season. He is also 65 points away from tying the UMass rookie record for points in a season.
