Toppin, Santos-Silva Named A-10 Co-Players of the Week; East Earns Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton sophomore Obi Toppin and VCU junior Marcus Santos-Silva Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week. Massachusetts freshman Sean East II was selected as A-10 Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Dec. 30 – Jan. 5.
 
Toppin led Dayton to three wins, including two A-10 road wins this week, averaging 22.0 points and 6.7 rebounds. A forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., he also shot .667 (28-of-42) from the field, had a pair of blocks and three steals across the three games. He scored a career-high 31 points against North Florida, 20 at La Salle and 15 in just 21 minutes at Saint Joseph's. In the two A-10 road wins, Toppin made 13-of-18 shots from the field and all eight of his free throws.
 
Santos-Silva recorded his fifth double-double of the season and tied a career-high with 26 points in a road win at George Mason. A forward from Taunton, Mass., he averaged 18.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and shot 65 percent (15-of-23) from the field in a pair of conference wins. He was sensational versus George Mason with the career-high points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, in which he shot .714 from the field (10-of-14) and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. He also had 11 points and seven rebounds in VCU’s win over Fordham.
 
A guard from Louisville, Ky., East averaged 22 points and 5.5 assists in two games last week. He had a season-high 26 points at Akron on Monday, adding three rebounds and six assists on 11-of-21 (.524) shooting. He followed that up with 18 points, five assists and four steals at Saint Louis on Sunday in his Atlantic 10 debut.

Duquesne’s Sincere Carry averaged 14 points and 6.5 assists while shooting .500 (8-of-16) from the field and .833 (10-of-12) at the line, including scoring 14 of his 16 points in the final 7:35 to help the Dukes hold off a Davidson rally and start 2-0 in league play … George Mason freshman Xavier Johnson averaged 13 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals and shot 64.3 percent from the floor in two games, tallying 14 points and four assists versus TCU and 12 points against VCU … George Washington freshman Jamison Battle scored 20 points and had six rebounds, shooting .833 (5-of-6) at the line in the Colonials’ conference opener versus St. Bonaventure … Carl Pierre had a 23-point, 10-rebound double-double for Massachusetts versus Akron, followed by a 16-point six rebound performance in the A-10 opener at Saint Louis  … Blake Francis helped lead Richmond to a 2-0 start in league play with 23 points on 8-of-16 (.500) shooting followed by 13 points on 5-of-12 (.417) shooting at Rhode Island … Kyle Lofton had a phenomenal week for St. Bonaventure, starting with a 32-point career-high performance with eight assists against Buffalo, followed by 17 points and eight assists in the Bonnies league-opening win at GW …  Ryan Daly averaged 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists for Saint Joseph’s at Richmond and versus Dayton … SJU freshman Cameron Brown scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds at Richmond and then had 16 points against the Flyers, shooting 10-of-20 (.500) for the week … Saint Louis’ Hasahn French had a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double to help the Billikens hold of UMass, after grabbing 12 rebounds at Duquesne …  SLU freshman Terrence Hargrove, Jr. scored 11 points on 5-of-8 (.625) shooting with five rebounds in the Billikens’ A-10 opener at Duquesne.
