NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Dayton’s Jayla Scaife was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while Davidson freshman Suzi-Rose Deegan took home Rookie of the Week honors. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played Jan. 20-26.
Scaife averaged 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in Dayton's two wins last week. The senior forward from Muncie, Ind., scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the victory at George Washington Wednesday before adding a 21-point, 10-rebound performance in the win over Fordham Sunday. Scaife shot 42.4 percent from the field in the two-game stretch.
In the Wildcats’ lone game of the week, Deegan tallied her fourth double-double of the season with game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while adding four assists, two steals and a block. The rookie from Marmion, Australia, shot 6-of-13 (.462) from the floor, including 3-of-4 (.750) on threes, while swishing home 3-of-4 free throws. It was the freshman's team-leading 15th double-figure scoring game and her fourth game with 10-plus rebounds. She has led the team in scoring 10 times and eight times in rebounding.
