NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Richmond's Campbell Erwin and Davidson's William Clark have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. On the women's side, Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado of VCU was named Player of the Week, and Claire Ghidotti of Dayton earned Rookie honors. The awards are the first of the spring season and include all matches played up to Jan. 19.
Erwin, a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas clinched the 4-3 victory against Delaware with both his doubles and singles wins. Erwin first paired with senior Klein Evans to clinch the doubles point at No. 3 doubles, 7-5. Erwin then won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles en route to a Spiders victory.
Clark had an excellent start to his collegiate career, going 2-0 in singles and doubles, and earning the team-clinching match point in a 4-3 decision over Winthrop last Sunday. Clark teamed with Sam Kavarana at No. 3 doubles to pick up a 6-3 decision, the Wildcats lone doubles win on the afternoon. The Alexandria, Va., native sealed up the match win for the Wildcats by scoring a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 6 singles for his first career victory.
Reigning A-10 Player of the Year, Diaz-Delgado started her year with a perfect 4-0 weekend in singles and doubles. In a 4-0 sweep of Temple, the Almeria, Spain, product paired with Noumea Witmus for a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point. She then earned the first singles point after the Owls' player retired due to injury (6-0 first set). Then against Syracuse, the pair of Diaz-Delgado and Witmus cruised to the only Rams doubles win at the third flight, 6-1. The junior snagged one of two VCU singles points defeating Guzal Yusupova 6-3, 6-1 in a 4-2 team loss.
Ghidotti, a sophomore from Dublin, Ohio, opened her collegiate career with back-to-back wins in the six spot for Dayton over the weekend. On Saturday, she defeated Northern Kentucky's Hannah Watton in a 7-6, 7-6 battle at Dayton's new home site, South Regency Tennis Center, in her Flyers debut. Ghidotti followed that with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Xavier's Lauren Fitz-Randolph in Cincinnati on Sunday night.
