PHILADELPHIA – The eighth-seeded Saint Joseph’s Hawks defeated the no. 9 seed George Washington Colonials in Philadelphia on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship.
Senior Alyssa Monaghan led the way for the Hawks with 21 points on 7-of-13 (.538) shooting to go with five rebounds and 3 assists while teammate Whisper Fisher and Lula Roig combined for another 24 points and 10 rebounds.
After a close first half, Monaghan put in a three-pointer to take the lead into halftime 26-22, and with a strong third quarter, the Hawks pushed their lead to double digits.
Saint Joseph’s will face top-seeded VCU in the quarterfinals on Friday at 11:00 am. That game, along with the three other quarterfinal matchups will be streamed live on ESPN+. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship final will all be played at Duquesne’s A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, March 8-10. GW was led by sophomore Neila Luma with 18 points on 7-of-15 (.467) shooting and 12 rebounds. She was joined by teammate Kayla Mokwuah with 13 points and 5 rebounds. With the loss, GW falls to 10-20 on the season.
