UMass Advances to #A10WBB Championship Quarterfinal with 2OT Victory

FAIRFAX, Va. – The tenth-seeded Massachusetts Minutewomen defeated the seventh-seeded George Mason Patriots in a double-overtime win in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Va., on Tuesday.

Led by junior Hailey Leidel, UMass took an early lead, outscoring the Patriots 12-5 in the first quarter. Leidel put up 31 points for the Minutewomen as the second leading scorer of the game on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting from the field, 3-of-7 (.429) from beyond the arc, and 18-of-18 (1.000) from the stripe to go with five rebounds and an assist. Destiney Philoxy added 19 points, three rebounds, and six assists while Genesis Rivera had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Mason was able to close the deficit, leading at points in both the second and third quarters to take the game into overtime, but the Minutewomen took it away in the second extra period. Jacy Bolton led the way for the Patriots as the game’s top point-scorer with 35 points on 10-of-14 (.714) shooting from the field and 14-of-16 (.875) from the stripe while adding 16 rebounds and two assists. Nicole Cardaño-Hillary added 21 points and nine rebounds for Mason.

UMass will face No. 2 seed Fordham in the quarterfinals on Friday at 4:30 pm. That game, along with the three other quarterfinal matchups will be streamed live on ESPN+. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship final will all be played at Duquesne’s A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, March 8-10.
