NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Fordham’s Bre Cavanaugh and Saint Louis’ Ciaja Harbison shared the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Honors while George Washington’s Tori Hyduke was named Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played Dec. 2-8.
Cavanaugh was instrumental in a pair of wins for the Rams at Manhattan and against Georgetown, recording two straight double-doubles and helping the team to its fourth and fifth wins out of their last six. The redshirt junior from Allamuchy, N.J., kicked the week off with a game-high 21 points, 12 rebounds (matching her career-high), and two steals over 39 minutes in the 51st annual Battle of the Bronx. Against Georgetown on Sunday, she matched her season-high with 23 points, adding 10 rebounds, three steals, and two assists over 39 minutes. For the week, Cavanaugh averaged 22.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 1.0 assist over 39.0 minutes. She shot 37.8 percent overall, 33.3 percent from deep, and 71.4 percent from the line.
Harbison scored 19 or more points in all three of SLU's games this week, leading the Billikens to a 2-1 record. She shot 48.7 percent from the field (19-of-39), including 50 percent from long range (6-of-12). Harbison also hit 93 percent of her free throws (14-of-15). She added a total of 12 assists in the three games, including a season-high six assists against Illinois State. The sophomore guard from Louisville, Ky., started off the week posting 19 points and five assists against Southeast Missouri State shooting 6-of-8 (.750) from the floor including 2-of-3 (.667) from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 (.833) from the line. Two days later, Harbison put up 19 points in a loss to SEC in-state rival Missouri at 6-of-13 shooting (.462) and going 5-for-5 (1.000) from the line. She added a twenty-point game in a win over Illinois State on Sunday with another perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and 66.7 percent from three.
Hyduke had two of the best games of her young career, averaging 22.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. She shot 56 percent from the floor (14-of-25), including 60 percent from three (9-of-15), and hit 7-of-8 at the free throw line (87.5 percent). The redshirt freshman from Fair Haven, N.J., opened the week by establishing a career-high 22 points at Delaware on Wednesday. She was 8-of-15 from the floor (53.3 percent) and hit 5-of-9 from beyond the arc (55.6 percent). Hyduke set a career-best with five steals defensively and locked down the Blue Hens' top option in the second half. She followed up with 22 more points on Saturday at Quinnipiac, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor (.600) with four more 3-pointers (4-of-6) and added four rebounds, three assists and a block at her point guard position in 32 minutes of action. As of Sunday, Hyduke is the top 3pt shooter in the A-10 (51.2 percent), ranking second among freshman nationally and overall 14th in the NCAA.
