NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Rhode Island junior Fatts Russell and Saint Louis junior Hasahn French as its Co-Players of the Week. George Washington freshman Jamison Battle was named A-10 Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Nov. 18-24.
Russell averaged 24.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.7 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game while leading Rhode Island to a 2-1 week. He was consistent in the three games, scoring 24 in a win over Nicholls, 22 in a win over North Texas and 26 in a loss to LSU. The guard from Philadelphia had at least three steals in all three games, getting five against Nicholls. Russell also had six assists against Nicholls and a career-high eight more versus LSU. He was 20-of-23 at the free throw line and 8-for-22 from 3-point range. He has topped 20 points in four straight games overall.
French averaged 15 points per game and 16.5 rebounds per game in a pair of Billiken wins last week against High Point and Belmont. He had a career game against Belmont, posting 21 points, a remarkable 24 rebounds, a career-high seven blocked shots and four assists. The 24 rebounds tied the A-10 single-game record and is tied (with George Washington’s Arnaldo Toro) for the most in an NCAA game this season. The forward from Middletown, N.Y., also nearly had a double-double against High Point with nine points and nine rebounds. He had two blocked shots and became the Billikens' all-time leader in that category during the High Point game.
Battle reached double figures in all three games, averaging 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds at the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase and recorded his first double-double in the fifth-place contest against Milwaukee. Battle connected on 10-of-14 (.417) from the outside over the weekend. He scored 13 points on 5-of-7 (.714) shooting from the field, including 3-for-4 (.750) from 3-point range with six rebounds against Kansas City. He had a similar game versus Evansville with six rebounds and 12 points on 3-of-6 (.500) from the field, all of which were beyond the arc. He closed the weekend with the 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, including hitting a perfect 4-of-4 from long range.
