PHILADELPHIA – Fourth-seeded La Salle punched its ticket to the semifinals in St. Louis with a 1-0 win over No. 5 Dayton Saturday in the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Quarterfinals at McCarthy Stadium.
La Salle (11-7-1) will face No. 1 Saint Louis Friday in the A-10 semifinals at SLU’s Hermann Stadium at 1:00 pm CT, 2:00 pm ET. The top-seeded Billikens dispatched No. 8 Duquesne 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals.
The Explorers scored the game’s only goal on an unassisted free kick just outside the box by Emily Banashefski. Banashefski lofted a ball over the Dayton wall towards the right post, that hooked into the net.
The Flyers (7-9-3) were more aggressive on the offensive end, with 18 shots, seven of which were on goal. La Salle managed eight shots, with six on goal. The teams were even in corner kick at two apiece.
La Salle goalie Claudia Jenkins stopped seven shots, facing 18, while UD keeper Emily Jones made five saves on eight shots faced.
Banashefski led the Explorers with three shots, including the game-winner. Dayton’s Laney Huber had a game-high six shots, followed by Landy Mertz’s five shots.
