FAIRFAX, Va. – Emma van der Vorst led the Atlantic 10 Conference in goals this season. Saturday, her biggest goal of the season gave No. 4 George Mason a ticket to the A-10 semifinals.
van der Vorst scored a golden goal to lift the homestanding Patriots to a 2-1 double-overtime win over fifth-seeded Massachusetts Saturday at George Mason Stadium in the A-10 Women’s Soccer Championship Quarterfinals. George Mason will face the winner of top-seeded Saint Louis and No. 8 Dayton in Friday’s semifinals in Dayton at 1:00 pm ET.
The 14th goal of the season for van der Vorst came following a pass from Irunn Aradottir, which van der Vorst pushed a slow-roller into the left corner in the 105th minute.
Mason (14-5) scored first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute on Emily Bradshaw’s first goal of the season. It was just the second career goal for the defender, who had help from Shannon Lee and Kayla Hamric following a rebound from five yards out. The Patriots took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Jenny Hipp tallied the equalizer for UMass (11-6-1), her seventh goal of the season, scoring on a cross from Paige Kozlowski and Lauren Bonavita in the 62nd minute.
Shots in the game were almost dead even, with the game-winner giving Mason a 14-13 edge. Mason had a more definitive 6-0 lead in corner kicks, but shots were also close, with the Patriots recording seven to UMass’ five.
Peyton Ryan made five saves in goal for UMass while Morgan Symmers stopped four shots.
