NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson juniors Crossan Cooper and Isabella McElrath were named Atlantic 10 Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Saint Louis Freshmen Janssen Gamilla and Emily Smith were named Men’s and Women’s Rookies of the Week. The awards, the first of the season, are for meets from Sept. 21 – Oct. 1.
Cooper turned in a pair of first-place finishes against four-time Division II National Champion Queens University on Sept. 21. He won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:36.73, the eighth best time in program history, and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:55.48. Cooper also placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.32 and contributed 22 of the team’s 96 points.
McElrath finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.03 and the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:28.05 against Queens University. She also took third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.53.
Gamilla helped Saint Louis defeat Xavier, Evansville, and Eastern Illinois at the Butler Duals. He placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:53.95 and was a member of the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished in 3:12.09. Gamilla also finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (50.45) and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.14) in a dual meet against Washington University.
Smith placed third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.63 and was part of both the second place 400-yard freestyle relay and the fourth place 200 medley relay in the Butler Duals. In the Billikens’ dual meet against Washington University, Smith won the 100-yard backstroke (58.38) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.29) and was a part of the winning 400 medley relay team.
