Fordham Takes Down La Salle, Richmond Pushes Past GW to Earn Spot in Quarterfinals

ORLANDO, Fla. –  Third-seeded Fordham defeated No. 14 La Salle, 4-0, on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus in the opening round of  play in the A-10 Women's Tennis Championship.

 

At No. 2 doubles Lexi Zobeideh and Mayu Sato didn't drop a set, winning the first match for the Rams 6-0, defeating La Salle's Alexandra Santarelli and Jade Smith. It was the same story at No. 3 doubles as Fordham clinched the doubles point with another 6-0 win from Maia Balce and Carolina Sa.

 

Gianna Insoqna would earn the first singles point for the Rams as she finished with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Jayla Smith. At No. 4 singles, Sato extended the Rams lead as she downed her Explorer opponent 6-1, 6-1. The match was clinched at No. 3 singles when Balce nailed down a 6-2, 6-1 win.

 

With the win, Fordham will face the winner of No. 6 Dayton/No. 11 Rhode Island at 9:00 am on Friday.

ORLANDO, Fla.—The eighth-seeded Richmond Spiders defeated No. 9 George Washington, 4-1, at the USTA National Campus, in Wednesday's opening round of the A-10 Women's Championship action.

 

The Colonials took the first match as Maire Decamps and Taylor Nederlander defeated their Spider opponents 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. The Spiders bounced back quickly as they took the doubles point winning at the top spot 6-3 and closing doubles with a 6-4 win at No. 3.

 

Lea Owens got Richmond on the board first in singles taking the victory 6-4, 6-1 over Melis Bayraktaroglu. GW would garner the second point in singles taking the win at No. 3 as Marie Decamps downed Gaby Rosales, 6-2, 6-2. Kelsey Williams picked up a 6-3 first set victory, before winning a close second set 7-5.

 

Kiana Marshall then clinched the match at No. 4 singles with a three set victory (4-6, 6-1, 6-3) over Sara Grubac.

 

With the win, the Spiders advance to play top-seeded VCU at 4:00pm Thursday. When the teams met earlier this season, the Rams won, 5-2.
