NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Dayton, the 2017 Atlantic 10 Champions, was selected as a No. 12 seed for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Duquesne, Fordham, George Washington Saint Joseph’s and Saint Louis are headed to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
The Flyers earned the A-10’s Automatic Bid to the field of 64 following a 70-56 victory over Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship.
Dayton (22-9) was selected as No. 12 seed in the Oklahoma City Region and will face No. 5 seed Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 18 at 4:00 pm ET in Louisville, Ky. The Flyers have participated in the NCAA Tournament in seven of the last eight seasons.
The Atlantic 10 tied for the most selections in the WNIT field with five teams. The five teams in the field ties for the most selections in A-10 history, a mark also set on five previous occssions.
Duquesne (18-15) is making its ninth consecutive postseason appearance. The Dukes will face Drexel in the first round of the WNIT on Friday.
Fordham’s appearance in the WNIT will be mark the fourth time in the past five years that the Rams (21-11) have participated in postseason play. The Rams will travel to face Georgetown.
George Washington (20-9), the A-10 Regular Season Co-Champions, will host Navy on Friday. With a win, the Colonials would face the winner of Rider and Virginia Tech in the second round.
Saint Joseph’s (17-14) will face Virginia on Friday, March 17. The Hawks are competing in the WNIT for the first time since 2012. The winner of Friday’s game will advance to face the winner of Ball State and Indiana.
Saint Louis (24-8) is participating in postseason play for the second straight season and only the third time in program history. Junior guard Jackie Kemph was named the A-10 Player of the Year after earning Co-Player of the Year honors in 2016. The Billikens will host IUPUI on Thursday evening.
