PITTSBURGH — Sixth-seeded George Washington defeated No. 3 Saint Louis 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13) in the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship quarterfinals Friday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
The Colonials (11-20) advance to the semifinals, where they will face second-seeded Dayton Saturday at 4:30 pm ET. Saturday’s semifinals will be streamed for free on the A-10 Network. The Colonials are the first No.6 seed to pick up a win in the A-10 Volleyball Championship.
Leading the way for GW was Aaliya Davidson and Sydney Welch, who both recorded double-digit digs. Marianna Warren had 13 kills to lead the Colonials.
In a back-and-forth match, George Washington took the first set, 25-23. Saint Louis responded in dominating fashion 25-14 to take the second set and event things up heading to intermission. Both teams alternated wins in sets three and four.
In set five, GW jumped out to a 7-3 lead before before Saint Louis tied it again at 13-13. A kill by Skylar Iott followed by a Saint Louis attack error sealed the victory for the Colonials.
Saint Louis’ Maya Taylor, the A-10 Rookie of the Year, led the Billikens with 20 kills and an attack percentage of .298. With the loss, Saint Louis falls to 13-15 on the season. MacKenzie Long recorded 21 digs.
