Stafford Selected as A-10 Baseball Player of the Week; Zombro, Wilson, Share Co-Pitcher Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Saint Joseph’s sophomore Deon Stafford, Jr. was chosen as the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week Monday, while George Mason junior Tyler Zombro and Rhode Island sophomore Tyler Wilson were named A-10 Co-Pitchers of the Week. Davidson freshman Max Bazin was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played April 18-24.

Stafford extended his Atlantic 10-leading home run total with a pair of long balls last weekend as the Hawks ran their winning streak to seven and took two out of three at Saint Louis to move into a tie for first place in the league. On Friday, Stafford’s first-inning two-run home run gave the Hawks an early lead en route to a 3-2 win. A day later, an RBI single by the catcher from Harrisburg, Pa., tied the game. His sixth-inning solo shot was the eventual game-winning run, giving Saint Joseph’s a 3-2 win. His two hits in Sunday's game extended his hitting streak to nine games, matching the longest by a Hawk this season. Stafford now has 13 home runs on the year, tying the school's single-season home run record.

Zombro pitched a complete-game two-hitter Saturday at Radford in a 2-0 win. The righty from Staunton, Va., recorded a season-high nine strikeouts, did not issue a walk and allowed just one single and one triple. He retired the side in order six times, throwing a first-pitch strike to 22 of the 30 batters he faced in the game. Zombro’s second complete game in as many starts, he has struck out 15 without a walk over 17.0 innings in his last two starts combined.

Wilson, who was A-10 Co-Pitcher of the Week last week as well, improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the A-10 after turning in dominant performance in Friday's win over St. Bonaventure. The southpaw from Palmer, Mass., allowed just one hit and one (unearned) run over nine complete innings. He struck out eight and walked none, closing the game with five straight 1-2-3 innings, including striking out the side in the eighth and fanning SBU's final batter. The complete-game victory was Wilson's second in as many outings and fourth of his career, and it also marked his second career complete-game one-hitter. The current A-10 strikeout leader (69), he has now gone 18.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

Bazin, a Charlotte, N.C. native, led the Wildcats this past week with a .667 batting average, thanks to two perfect games. Against Winthrop in mid-week action, Bazin recorded his first perfect game, going 3-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored that helped lift the Wildcats to a 12-10 come-from-behind victory on Tuesday. Against Fordham on Sunday, the centerfielder went 4-for-4 for a career high despite the loss. Bazin finished the week with eight hits, one RBI, four runs scored and four walks for a .750 on-base percentage in addition to 2-for-2 in stolen bases. He currently holds a 14-game on-base streak.
