KINGSTON, R.I.— George Mason junior Erin Mitchell chased down a bouncing ball and put it in the net to give the fourth seeded Patriots a 2-1 overtime win over No. 5 Fordham in the Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship quarterfinals Thursday at URI Soccer Complex.

Mason (13-6-1) advances to play top-seeded Saint Joseph’s Friday in a 7:30 pm semifinal.

The Patriots’ game winner came six minutes into overtime, the third straight OT game of the championship. Mitchell chased down a loose ball that took a high bounce over the Fordham defense and launched a shot into the net.

The golden goal was needed after Fordham spoiled Mason’s regulation party. The Patriots had scored just 15 minutes into the game on an unassisted rip by Jenna Hamilton into the lower left corner. But Fordham (10-5-5) held off several George Mason chances through the next 74 minutes, allowing Brooke Salmon to tally an equalizer with 1:02 left in regulation and force overtime.

The Patriots held the offensive edge, with 13 shots to Fordham’s six. Six of Mason’s shots were on goal, resulting in four saves for Rams keeper Megan Fitzgerald. Kirsten Glad stopped three Fordham shots. Mason also led in corner kicks 9-2.
