KINGSTON, R.I.— Top seeded Saint Joseph’s got an impressive game from netminder Grace Bendon to outlast upset-minded No. 8 Rhode Island 1-0 in double overtime in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship Thursday at URI Soccer Complex.
The Hawks (17-1-2) advance to face the winner of the No. 4 George Mason/No. 5 Fordham game Friday at 7:30 pm.
Bendon stopped a first-half penalty kick, and then made a pair of spectacular saves late in the second half to keep the Rams off the board. In all she made 10 saves to maintain the clean sheet for SJU. Rhody keeper Katie Nickles was strong in net as well, recording eight saves against a potent Hawks offense. The two teams combined for 33 total shots, 20 by the SJU and 13 from Rhode Island (6-8-5).
Saint Joseph’s claimed the victory less than two minutes into the second overtime on an own goal as the URI defense attempted to clear a corner kick off the line. The Hawks led in corner kicks 11-4.
