DAVIDSON, N.C. – Fordham scored three goals in the second half to seal a 4-0 win over Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals Friday at Alumni Soccer Stadium. This will be Fordham’s second appearance in the championship game in the last three years.
No. 2 Fordham (10-6-3) advances to face fifth-seeded VCU, which earned a spot in the title game with a 1-0 win over No. 8 Dayton.
Ole Sandnes scored Fordham’s first goal 19 minutes in, on a deflection off a defender, giving the Rams an early lead. The game remained 1-0 until the 73rd minute of the game when Fordham found itself in the box again as Jannik Loebe found the back of the net off a rebound with help from Cole Stevenson and Eric Ohlendorf.
The pressure on offense stayed strong for Fordham as Sandnes scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Stevenson. Loebe secured the win for the Rams on a penalty kick into center over the keepers head.
Fordham dominated on offensive taking 17 shots to Rhode Island’s five. Fordham also led in corner kicks 6-4 and in saves, 6-3. Rhode Island ends its season with an 8-11-1 overall record.
Sunday’s title game will air live on American Sports Network at noon.
