Herranz?s Golden Goal Lifts VCU Into A-10 Semifinal

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Jorge Herranz scored with just under a minute left in overtime Thursday to send fifth-seeded VCU to the semifinals of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship at Davidson's Alumni Soccer Stadium. Herranz’s goal gave the Rams a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Massachusetts in the championship quarterfinals.

The Rams (7-9-3) will face No. 8 Dayton Friday at 5:00 pm with a bid to the championship final on the line.

Massachusetts struck first in the 19th minute of the game on a hard shot by Alex DeSantis off a redirect from Ty Goncalves.

With Massachusetts winning, 1-0, VCU’s Brandon Eaton found the net with help from Luc Fatton and Dakota Barnathan and tied the game with just 26 seconds left on the clock, forcing the overtime period.

Herranz’s gamewinning goal, which was an unassisted chip shot just over the goalkeeper’s head, came with just over a minute left in the extra frame.

The Minutemen relied on their defense as they produced four saves on VCU’s 19 total shots, six of which were on goal, and finish their season with a 7-9-3 overall record.
