No. 8 Dayton Upsets Top-Seeded Saint Louis, 2-1 to Open A-10 Championship

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Eighth-seeded Dayton used a strong offensive attack to claim a 2-1 upset over No. 1 Saint Louis Thursday at Alumni Soccer Stadium in the first game of the 2016 Men’s Soccer Championship.

The Flyers (8-8-3) advance to Friday’s semifinals at 5:00 pm against the winner of No. 4 Massachusetts and No. 5 VCU. It is the second year in a row the eight seed has beat a one seed in an A-10 Championship game.

After a scoreless first half, Dayton struck in the 77 minute of play when Nick Hagenkord found the back of the next with help from Michael Fransca as the ball was played across the box and through the keeper’s legs.

Saint Louis answered back and scored with less than two minutes to play as Akeem Richards headed one off the crossbar in a crowded  box, tying the game and forcing the overtime period.

Five minutes into overtime Dayton pushed up the field, as David Lianes passed down to Hagenkord who headed it to Alvaro Navarro in the box who struck it hard past a diving Sascha Otte.

The Flyers outshot Saint Louis 7-9 and had five corner kicks to seven by the Billikens, but both keepers made three saves.

The Billikens season comes to an end with an overall record of 7-8-3.
