NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade announced Thursday that Sue Bergen has been hired to the newly created position of Assistant Commissioner/Director of Finance. Bergen is a long-time member of the Rhode Island athletic staff, having served as Associate Athletics Director for Business and Finance and Senior Woman Administrator.
The new position was created to focus on budget forecasting and analysis. Bergen will also be responsible for supervising budget management and development and execution of all accounting functions and business operations, including coordinating the annual audit and preparation of A-10 financial reports.
“I’m looking forward to Sue joining our staff. Hiring someone of her experience from one of our member institutions is a real advantage,” McGlade stated. “Her knowledge and background related to NCAA revenue distribution, student-athlete services and championship budgeting will be a great benefit to the A-10.”
Bergen has 28 years of experience in business and finance, including 13 at Rhode Island. As the Rams’ chief financial officer, she worked with department heads, head coaches, and administrators in preparing the annual budget. She managed the day-to-day budget operations, including revenue, scholarships and expenditures. She also has prepared numerous conference and NCAA annual reports and has served on a number of university boards.
“I am excited to join the Atlantic 10 staff and start the next phase of my career,” Bergen said. “I fully expect working in a conference office will provide new experiences and challenges that I’m looking forward to. I want to thank Commissioner McGlade for this opportunity, and also thank Thorr Bjorn and the Rhode Island staff for the opportunities I’ve had and friendships I’ve made over the past 13 years.”
While at Rhode Island, Bergen also served as Senior Woman Administrator, with sport oversight of women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and softball. She also worked closely with other A-10 SWAs and chaired the A-10 women’s volleyball committee while also serving on other A-10 committees, including the finance committee and revenue resources subcommittee. Bergen also chaired the Rhode Island athletics five-year strategic plan.
“I would like to congratulate Sue on her new role within the Conference Office and applaud Commissioner McGlade on her decision to make her part of the team,” said Rhode Island Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn. “Sue has done an amazing job at URI over the past 13 years serving as our Associate Athletic Director for Business and Finance/SWA. Both she and her husband Tom will be missed terribly.”
Prior to Rhode Island, Bergen worked as an accountant and financial analyst for a number of organizations, including the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the First Hospital Corporation. She received her accounting certification (CPA) in 1994 and completed her undergraduate work at Northern Michigan University.
She and her husband, Tom, have two children, both of whom just completed their senior years at Rhode Island. Their daughter Jessica was a member of the rowing team.
