NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Two Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball programs, St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis, were named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I programs on Tuesday.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 presented by AT&T annually recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women’s basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade point average (GPA) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2014-15 season is the 20th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
Saint Louis placed sixth on the list with a 3.564 team grade point average, while St. Bonaventure was 23rd with a team GPA of 3.41. Missouri-Kansas City led the nation in team GPA at 3.7.
"The WBCA applauds these teams for their commitment to academic excellence during the 2014-15 school year," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "The student-athlete experience is an exciting and challenging time period and we appreciate these programs for setting an academic standard that other teams can strive to achieve. We value the hard work and dedication the players and coaches have put forth to thrive in the classroom and on the basketball court."
Led by head coach Jim Crowley, St. Bonaventure has a history of success on and off the court. This is the fourth time in the last eight seasons the Bonnies have earned a spot in the WBCA Top 25 Team Honor Roll. St. Bonaventure averaged 21 wins per season over the last seven years, earning one NCAA Tournament berth and four WNIT berths. The Bonnies finished 15-15 last season and Healy earned second team all-conference honors.
The Saint Louis sixth-place finish is the highest in program history, topping SLU’s previous best of eighth place in 2000-01. The Billikens also landed on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll in 2006-07 (17th) and 1998-99 (23rd).
