GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The University of Massachusetts rowing program and head coach Jim Dietz concluded the 2015 season with appearances in the C or D finals of the NCAA Championships in Gold River, Calif., Sunday as the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ took to the water at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
The Second Varsity 8+ brought home 18th overall at the NCAA Championships and participated in the "C" finals. The Varsity 8+ tallied 20th and the Varsity 4+ earned 21st as each was part of its respective "D" final. As a squad, the Minutewomen finished 20th overall and earned 21 team points with 10 from the Second Varsity 8+, nine via the Varsity 8+ and two from the Varsity 4+.
The Varsity 8+ secured the highest UMass finish within its race Sunday as Heather Pekarovich, Lauren St. Pierre, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Aiste Balciunaite, Nicole Destefano, Haley York and Allanah Rubi-Mooney earned second with a time of 6:56.967. Northeastern took the top spot in the "D" final (6:52.394) while the Minutewomen out-performed Navy (7:01.967) and Jacksonville (7:02.813).
The Second Varsity 8+ reached the finish in 7:02.760 for sixth in a tightly contested "C" final. Haley Eovine, Rachel Boudreau, Samantha Wonderlin, Katherine Armstrong, Hadley Irvin, Krysten Menks, Zoe Hill, Natalie Boisvert and Grace Bundy battled boats from Princeton (6:46.443), Harvard (6:48.978), USC (6:56.421), Northeastern (7:00.674) and Notre Dame (7:02.703) during their year-end race.
The Varsity 4+ of Abigail Raichek, Hallie Dunlap, Mia Bornstein, Courtney Edson and Estefi Marti-Malvido ended its final competitive run in 8:33.756 for third in its final and 21st overall at the NCAA Championships. Central Florida (8:16.759) took the top spot ahead of Northeastern (8:20.961) while Jacksonville (9:11.140) finished fourth.
The end of the NCAA Championships concludes the University of Massachusetts rowing program's 2015 campaign. In addition to their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships, the Minutewomen also successfully defended their Atlantic 10 Championship and Dad Vail Regatta women's title during the 2015 spring slate.
