NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Six time defending champion Massachusetts has earned the top-seed in the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship set to begin Friday, May 1 at George Washington’s Athletic Field, Mt. Vernon Complex.
Richmond will serve as the second seed after completing the regular season with a 6-2 A-10 record. Duquesne and George Mason each finished with 5-3 records, with the Dukes claiming the third seed thanks to a head-to-head win over the Patriots on Sunday.
UMass (16-1 / 8-0 A-10) garners the top seed by virtue of its sixth straight undefeated regular season in league play. The Minutewomen have now won 36 consecutive regular season games against league foes and 46 overall including A-10 Championship contests.
Massachusetts will face Mason on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the first semifinal. The Patriots are making their first A-10 Lacrosse Championship appearance in their second year in the league. Under the direction of first-year head coach Jessy Morgan, Mason currently stands at 10-6 overall. Jacquelyn Spalding leads Mason with 38 goals on the season.
Richmond and Duquesne will tangle in the other semifinal at 3:30 on Friday. The Spiders are led by Emily Doyle who has 59 points on 29 goals and 30 assists. UR which is 9-8 overall will face a Duquesne team that won a pair of games over the weekend to claim its spot in the championship. The Dukes defeated Davidson and Mason to finish 5-3 and 9-8 overall. Kaelin Shaw (36) and Clare Hurley (32) have combined for 68 goals this season for Duquesne.
The winners of Friday’s semis will advance to the championship final on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that game stakes claim to the A-10 automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
