Hurley, Murphy Vallarelli, Carpentier Selected as Lacrosse Award Winners

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Duquesne senior Clare Hurley and Massachusetts sophomore Hannah Murphy shared Atlantic 10 Conference Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week honors the league announced Monday. Murphy’s senior teammate, Rachel Vallarelli won Defensive Player of the Week and George Mason freshman Taylor Carpentier was named A-10 Rookie of the Week. The awards were for games played from the April 6 - 12.

Hurley scored hat tricks in a pair of home wins over Saint Joseph's and La Salle last week. She scored three goals and added an assist, four ground balls and four draw controls in Friday's win over Saint Joseph’s. The midfielder from Penfield, N.Y. then scored three goals, chipped in four ground balls and two draw controls in Sunday's win over La Salle. She totaled seven points on the six goals and the assist for the week, including scoring six times in her nine shots on goal.

Murphy, a midfielder from Duxbury, Mass., posted a total of nine goals, three assists, and 15 draw controls as she led UMass to a 2-0 week with wins over Vermont and on the road at Davidson. In the win over Vermont, she had six points on four goals and two assists while adding a career-high tying nine draw controls. In the win at Davidson, she again tied her career-best total of six points with a career-high five goals and one assist while adding six draw controls, a groundball and one caused turnover. The performances extended her streak of games with four-or-more goals to four giving her 17 in that stretch.

Vallarelli picked up a pair of wins in cage during the week as UMass defeated Vermont and won at Davidson. A Hartsdale, N.Y., native, she made 10 saves during the week and had two groundballs, while allowing just 11 goals in 101 minutes of work. In the win over Vermont, she had six saves while allowing seven goals. In the win at Davidson, she made four saves in 41 minutes of play, while allowing four goals. She continues to rank as the No. 1 goalie in the NCAA for GAA (4.60) and save percentage (.570) while sporting as 12-1 overall record.

Carpentier averaged seven saves per game as the Patriots went 1-1 on the week with a close loss at Davidson followed by an 8-5 home win over league-leading Richmond. The freshman snagged 13 saves against 18 shots on goal by the Spiders, including four saves in the last 11 minutes of action to maintain the Patriots lead. She made seven saves versus Davidson while facing 20 shots, 16 of which were on goal. Carpentier faced a total of 43 shots in the two games, 34 of which were on goal. She made 20 total saves for a .588 save percentage for the week.
