RICHMOND, VA—Second seeded Dayton defeated Saint Joseph’s 80-61 in the Quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship Friday afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum.
Dayton advances to the semifinals and will face either Duquesne or Rhode Island Saturday at 1:30pm on CBS Sports Network.
Amber Deane led all scorers for Dayton (24-5) with 22 points and eight rebounds. Ally Malott chipped in 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Flyers.
Saint Joseph’s (13-17) jumped out to an early start as Natasha Cloud scored the first basket of the game before Dayton tied the score with 19:32 to play. Ciara Andrews knocked down a three-pointer to give the Hawks their largest lead of the game at 5-2. The game was tied at 12-12 with 14:56 left before Dayton went on a 13-5 run to clinch the lead for good. St. Joseph’s cut Dayton’s lead to seven, 25-18 with 9:01 remaining in the first half. The Flyers used a 13-2 spurt over the next three minutes to extend its advantage to double digits, 38-20 with 6:26 left in the half. Saint Joseph’s responded with a 10-2 run to cut its deficit back to 10 points with 3:26 remaining. The teams traded baskets and Dayton held a 44-33 advantage at halftime.
The Hawks cut the lead back to single digits at 46-37 with 16:30 remaining in the game. The Flyers answered and extended their lead back to double digits, 59-43 with a 13-6 spurt over the next four minutes. Kathleen Fitzpatrick knocked down two free throws for Saint Joseph’s to cut their deficit back to 14 points at 12:22. Over the next six minutes, the Flyers used a 13-0 run to reach a 27-point advantage, their largest of the game at 72-45 with 6:45 remaining. St. Joseph’s answered with a 14-4 run to cut Dayton’s lead back to 17 points, 76-59 with less than three minutes to play. In the final minutes, Dayton used a short 4-2 spurt to claim an 80-61 victory.
Ashley Robinson led Saint Joseph’s with 15 points and Sarah Fairbanks tallied 10 rebounds.
Dayton shot 47.5% overall and outscored Saint Joseph’s 27-9 from the bench. Saint Joseph’s shot 32.8% overall.
