RICHMOND, VA—Fourth seeded Fordham topped Richmond 46-45 in the Quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship Friday afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum.
Fordham advances to the semifinals of the A-10 Championship and will face top-seeded George Washington on Saturday at 11:00am on CBS Sports Network.
Emily Tapio led all scorers for Fordham with 14 points and five rebounds.
Tiffany Ruffin scored the first basket of the game for Fordham (20-10) before Richmond (18-13) tied the game with 17:01 remaining in the first half. The Rams used a 10-2 spurt to hold a double-digit advantage, 12-2 at 11:45. Over the next seven minutes, the Spiders went on an 18-8 run to tie the score 20-20 with 4:43 left until halftime. The game remained scoreless until the buzzer as Richmond and Fordham put up a total of 12 missed shots. Fordham shot 36.0% from the field while Richmond shot 25.0% in the first half.
The Spiders opened the second half on a 9-2 run to hold a 29-22 advantage with 14:22 remaining. Over the next eight minutes, Fordham used a 9-2 run to tie the score for the third time and extended their run to 16-4 to hold a 38-33 lead with 6:17 left in the second half. Richmond used a 6-1 spurt to regain the lead, 39-38 at 3:42. Samantha Clark made a basket for the Rams but the Spiders responded and tied the score for the fourth time, 40-40 with just less than three minutes to play. Both teams sank one of two free throws to tie the score 41-41 at 2:25. G’mrice Davis scored a layup a 1:13 to give the Rams a one point lead, 44-43 which was extended to two points after Davis made a free throw with 0:20 remaining. Genevieve Okoro sank both chances at the line for Richmond to tie the score, 45-45 with 0:10 to play. Taryn Durant clinched the victory for Fordham at the line to claim a 46-45 victory.
Micaela Parson led Richmond with 12 points and four rebounds. Okoro led the Spiders in rebounding with 8.
Ruffin paced Fordham with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Fordham shot 36.2% overall and 76.9% from the line while Richmond shot 30.2% overall and 57.1% from the line.
