NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--The Atlantic 10 placed five teams in the Women’s Basketball postseason. George Washington and Dayton both earned a spot in the NCAA field of 64, which was announced Monday on the NCAA Selection Show on ESPN. Duquesne, Fordham and Richmond were all chosen to play in the WNIT.
Atlantic 10 Champion George Washington earned a six seed in the Spokane Region and will travel to Corvallis, Ore., to play No. 11 Gonzaga Friday at 7:30 pm ET. The Colonials, led by A-10 Player of the Year Jonquel Jones, are 29-3 overall, setting a record for program wins. GW finished A-10 play at 15-1. The winner of the GW-Gonzaga game will advance to face the winner between No. 3 Oregon State and No. 14 South Dakota State Sunday.
Dayton will be a No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 Iowa State in Lexington, Ky. as part of the Albany Region at noon on Friday. The Flyers were the runners up in the 2015 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship and are 25-6 overall and were 14-2 in the A-10. The UD-ISU winner will play the winner between No. 2 Kentucky and No. 15 Tennessee State Sunday.
Duquesne, which finished third in the Atlantic 10 regular season, earned the WNIT automatic qualification as the top A-10 team not chosen for the NCAA field. The Dukes will face Youngstown State on the road Thursday. Duquesne is 21-10 overall and were 12-4 in conference play.
Fordham, which won the 2014 A-10 title, was 20-11 overall and 11-5 in the A-10. The Rams will host Central Connecticut State on Thursday, March 19. If Fordham wins, it advances to play the St. John's/Army winner.
Richmond will travel to Stetson on Friday. The Spiders are 18-13 overall and 9-7 in league play. If Richmond and Duquesne both win, they will advance to face each other in the second round.
