Fordham Nets Four Penalty Kicks, Advances to Championship

DAVIDSON, N.C. - After 110 minutes of even play, the Fordham Rams (13-6-2) used four successful penalty kicks to advance to the 2015 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, Friday, at Davidson's Alumni Soccer Stadium.

George Mason (9-9-2) got on the board with a header scored by Sarah Hardison in the 39th minute. The goal, a team-leading 10th of the season, came off of a corner kick from Kaila Williams.

Fordham evened the score in the 59th minute on Jessica Widmann's 12th goal of the season. Ivana Lahcanski fed the ball into the box, hitting a George Mason defender and bouncing to the feet of Widmann, who gathered it and fired the shot.

The Rams had a chance to go ahead in the 73rd minute as Widmann was awarded a penalty kick after a Mason foul, but her shot sailed high over the crossbar. It was the first penalty kick during Fordham's season.

Fordham turned up the heat in the second half, taking 14 shots, with three on target stopped by Kirsten Glad.

In the first overtime period, Mason's Alex Myers had a perfect chance in front of the net, but her shot went just wide left. Less than a minute, Hardison put another shot on goal, which was deflected out by Megan Fitzgerald.

Widmann would get redemption as her penalty kick went high in the center of the goal, lifting the Rams over George Mason.

For Fordham, Abby Doyle, Nicole Bates, and Brianna Blunck all netted penalty kicks, while Hardison and Emily Littell found the back of the net.

Glad finished with five saves, while Fitzgerald made four total stops.

The Rams advance to their third ever Atlantic 10 Championship finale and will face the winner of La Salle and Duquesne, Sunday, at noon on American Sports Network.
