Amankona, Gardan, Boino Take Men's Soccer Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Dayton's Amass Amankona and VCU's Pierre Gardan have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Soccer Co-Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. Also honored was Kevin Boino of Massachusetts, who earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards are for games played Oct. 12-18.

Amankona scored a hat trick in Dayton’s 5-0 win over La Salle, helping the Flyers remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play. The senior from Kumasi, Ghana, continues to lead the conference in goals (9) and points (21). He also ranks sixth in the nation in scoring and eighth in points. Not only did the diminutive midfielder score with his feet, but also with his head in the contest versus La Salle.

Gardan posted a pair of shutouts last week for the Rams against La Salle and Duquesne, which extends his shutout streak to four games. The Lorient, France, native has not allowed a goal in 400 minutes of conference action and has only given up one goal at George Mason to kick off league play. Through 12 games, the sophomore goalkeeper posts a 0.85 goals against average, good for second in the A-10.

Coming off of the bench, Boino scored a pair of goals as UMass defeated St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in the Minutemen's only match of the week. The freshman from Dalton, Mass., tallied a goal in the first half and another in the second half helping UMass extend its current unbeaten streak to three games. Of Boino's three goals this season, two have served as game winners, including his second half marker against the Bonnies.
