UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The University of Dayton volleyball team was eliminated from the 2014 NCAA Tournament with its 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-16) loss to fourth-ranked Penn State Saturday night at PSU's Rec Hall. The Flyers were led by junior Alaina Turner with nine kills and 10 digs.
Also for the Flyers, freshman Jane Emmenecker with 25 assists and six digs while junior Janna Krafka passed eight digs and also recorded one kill in the match. Junior Jill Loiars chipped in eight kills.
Dayton (30-6) and Penn State (32-3) traded points early on but the Nittany Lions were ahead three, 7-4. A Turner kill and a Krafka service ace pulled the Flyers within one, 7-6, but UD found itself down four at 11-7. Consecutive kills from Loiars cut into the PSU lead, 13-11, but Penn State stretched its lead to six, 17-11. The Nittany Lion advantage was eight, 22-14, when the Flyers signaled for their second timeout of the frame and then eight again at 23-15. PSU reached set point at 24-16 but UD held four times before Penn State called for a break. The Nittany Lions scored on the next play to take the first set, 25-20.
A Penn State serve into the net gave Dayton a 2-1 advantage in the second set but the Nittany Lions rattled off three straight to go up, 4-2. The two squads saw six ties before PSU could score two in a row to take the 11-9 lead. Back-to-back kills from PSU's Haleigh Washington gave the Lions their largest advantage of the set to that point, 17-12, and the Penn State lead was four at 19-15. Down six, 21-15, the Flyers called for timeout and out of the break, UD cut it to six twice. A Turner kill held Penn State at set point but the Nittany Lions took the frame, 25-18.
PSU opened the third set strong, jumping out to the 6-1 lead on the strength of three service aces. Dayton got back in the game but the PSU lead was five again at 10-5. The Flyers put together a 3-0 spurt to cut the Nittany Lion lead to three, 11-8, and were within three again, 12-9, after a kill from Loiars. Trailing six, 15-9, Dayton put together another 3-0 run to trim the Penn State lead but the PSU lead was soon eight, 22-14. The Nittany Lions reached match point at 24-16 and took the game on the next point to win the match, 3-0.
Penn State was led by Megan Courtney with 11 kills while Micha Hancock set 36 assists, passed eight digs and served up three aces.
