No. 3 Saint Louis Advances to Semis With Win Over No. 6 Duquesne

DAYTON, Ohio— All-Conference selection Danielle Rygelski tallied a 24 kill-10 dig double-double and hit .375 to lead third-seeded Saint Louis into the 2014 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship semifinals Friday night. The Billikens defeated No. 6 Duquesne, 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 26-24, 25-14) in the A-10 quarterfinals at the Frericks Center on the University of Dayton campus.

Saint Louis (21-9) will face No. 2 George Washington in Saturday’s late semifinal at 7:00 pm. Duquesne, last year’s A-10 champion, closes out the season at 16-12.

Rygelski had eight kills  in the first set alone, and led the Saint Louis offense, which also got 10 kills and a .353 hitting percentage from Megan Gilbert. Defensively four different players registered digs for the Bills, led by 17 from Mackenzie Long. Taylor Paulson also had a match-high seven blocks. SLU hit .270 as a team.

The teams split sets one and two, setting up a thrilling third set. Duquesne had a four-point lead twice midway through the game, but SLU fought back and tied the match at 17 on a block from Taylor Paulson and A-10 Rookie of the Year Nenye Okoro. The teams battled over the next several points, but with the score tied at 24, the Billikens got back-to-back kills from Rygelski to secure the 26-24 win. Saint Louis then dominated the fourth set to win the match.

Lacey Levers had 14 kills and hit .440 for Duquesne while All-Conference selection Arielle Love had nine kills and hit .364. Setter Mary Henry had a team-high 14 digs and 34 assists.
