Men's Soccer Major Awards Honor Fjeldberg, Schulte, Adjei, Hughes, Currier

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Jonas Fjeldberg of Dayton was voted the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year, and his teammate Kingsford Adjei was named A-10 Midfielder of the Year. Saint Louis' Patrick Schulte was voted the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, freshman Alec Hughes of Massachusetts was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year and Dennis Currier from Dayton was selected as Coach of the Year.

The Atlantic 10 announced the five major awards along with the All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic teams Wednesday prior to the start of the 2020-21 A-10 Men's Soccer Championship, which begins Thursday at the Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio. The major awards, All-Conference Teams and All-Rookie Team were voted on by the A-10’s head men's soccer coaches. The All-Academic team was selected by the men's soccer media relations directors.

Fjeldberg recorded 14 points this season to rank second in the league, scoring five goals (tied for second in the A-10) and four assists (tied for third). He ranks tied for second  in shots on goals (15) in the league. The 2021 MLS draftee from Jessheim, Norway also was named an All-Conference First Team forward. This is the senior's second straight A-10 Offensive Player of the Year award.

Adjei repeats as A-10 Midfielder of the Year, tying Fjeldberg for second place in the A-10 in points (14), tying for third in assists (4) and tying for fifth in goals (5). Adjei, a junior from Old Akrade, Ghana, also was named an All-Conference First Team Midfielder.

Sophomore Schulte was second in the A-10 with a .53 goals against average, tying for fourth in the league with 30 saves. The All-Conference First Team goalkeeper from St. Charles, Mo., also tied for the league lead in shutouts with four.
 
A freshman forward from Glastonbury, Conn., Hughes tallied seven goals and 16 points to lead the Atlantic 10 in both categories. An All-Rookie and All-Conference First Team Forward selection, he recorded two game-winning goals to tie for third in the A-10 and had a league-high 15 shots on goal.
 
Currier earned his second Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honor, and his first since 2009. The Flyers finished as the A-10 Regular Season and West Division Champions with a 4-1-1 league record and a 4-3-1 overall mark. Dayton was picked in a tie for second in the A-10 Preseason Poll.

Joining Fjeldberg, Adjei, Schulte and Hughes on the All-Conference First Team were forwards Oscar Haynes Brown from George Washington and Simon Belcher of Saint Louis, midfielder Yosuke Hanya of UMass and Christian Buendia from SLU, and defenders Luke McNamara of Fordham, UMass' Graham Brenner and Mujeeb Murana of Saint Louis.

The All-Conference Second Team includes goalkeeper Justin Grady from GW, defenders Elias Harryson of Dayton, Saint Louis' Kipp Keller and Ulrik Edvarsen of VCU, midfielders Ben Shepherd from UMass, Saint Louis' Mason Leeth and Celio Pompeu of VCU, and forwards Lucas Hauth from Davidson, Dayton's Toluwalase Oladeinbo, Omari Cotterell of La Salle and Saint Louis' John Klein.

The All-Academic team includes Hauth, Fordham's Jacob Bohm, Tom Cooklin and Sandro Weber from George Washington, Rhode Island's Hugo Guerra, St. Bonaventure's Shea Currey, David Grana and Alan Kahlenbeck from Saint Joseph's, Keaton Schieffer of Saint Louis and VCU's Toranosuke Abe and Simon Fitch.
 
Joining Hughes, Leeth and Buendia on the All-Rookie team are Davidson's Trey Gardiner and Adam Luckhurst,  Dayton's Marc Kouadio, Maxi Hopfer of Duquesne, La Salle's Scott Beeks and Junior Nare, Rhode Island's Kevin Castaneda, and VCU's Jonathan Kanagwa.
 
The 2020-21 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship begins with two Thursday matches between No. 1 Dayton and No. 4 George Washington in the first semifinal at noon ET and No. 2 Saint Louis and No. 3 Fordham in the second semifinal at 4:00 pm ET. The championship final will be played Saturday at noon ET. All three matches of the A-10 championship will be streamed live on ESPN+.
