NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Fordham senior Luke McNamara its Men's Soccer Player of the Week, while Davidson sophomore Giacomo Piccardo was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Massachusetts freshman Alec Hughes earned Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards, announced Monday and presented by Biosteel, are for games played March 22-28.
McNamara scored twice on Saturday, including the game-tying goal, in a 2-2 draw with Rhode Island. It was the second multi-goal game of his career for the defender from South Huntington, N.Y. He was also part of a Fordham defense that kept UMass' high scoring offense to just a penalty kick goal on Wednesday in a 2-1 double-overtime victory.
A transfer from Boston College, Piccardo helped the Wildcats to a 3-0 shutout win at George Mason over the weekend. The sophomore goalkeeper from Genova, Italy, faced 18 shots and made a number of incredible saves en route to his first shutout and a game-high 8 saves.
Hughes scored a pair of goals in the first 32 minutes of a 2-1 win on the road at Saint Joseph's. The forward from Glastonbury, Conn., connected on a header in the 23rd minute off a free kick sent in by Ben Shepherd, putting it into the top right corner, then added his second goal in the 32nd-minute, scoring on a right-footed shot to the short side of the keeper to put UMass ahead 2-0 in the eventual 2-1 win.
