NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Massachusetts freshman Alec Hughes its Men's Soccer Player of the Week, while George Washington sophomore Justin Grady earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Duquesne freshman Maxi Hopfer was named the Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday and presented by Biosteel, are for games played March 15-21.
Hughes scored three goals as the Minutemen went 1-0-1 in conference action last week. The forward from Glastonbury, Conn., found the back of the net in the 13th-minute in an eventual double-overtime 1-1 draw against La Salle to start the week. Hughes then put home two goals in a 5-2 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday, scoring two within the first 20 minutes of play as the Minutemen improved to 5-0-1 on the season.
Grady anchored a pair of strong defensive efforts for the Colonials last week between the posts. On Wednesday, the sophomore goalkeeper from Wyncote, Pa., recorded a clean sheet, making three saves in a scoreless draw at George Mason. He equaled his season high with four stops over 110 minutes in a 1-1 draw vs. Davidson on Saturday.
Hopfer received a pass just across midfield, sidestepped a defender, and drilled a shot to the left side of the net in the 107th minute to give Duquesne its first win in the 13-game series with Saint Louis. The Styria, Austria, forward finished the week with 11 shots, including five on goal in the Dukes' matches with Dayton and SLU.
