CINCINNATI – The F.C. Cincinnati organization in Major League Soccer selected University of Dayton senior midfielder Jonas Fjeldberg with the 54
th overall pick in the 2021 MLS Superdraft.
Fjeldberg was selected with the 27
th pick in the second round, 54
th overall, and the only player picked from the Atlantic 10.
"I am really proud to represent UD and I'm excited for the opportunity that lies ahead," said Fjeldberg. "I could not have done it without the support of the UD community and the Red Scare. I want to thank everyone that has been a part of my journey through my time here at Dayton."
Head coach
Dennis Currier has had multiple former players drafted into the MLS, including current Colorado Rapids Defender of the Year Lalas Abubakar back in the 2016 draft who went fourth overall. Currier has had seven former players chosen in the draft and he knew Fjeldberg had the skill set to go to the next level.
"Jonas is one of the most dynamic attacking players in college soccer," said Dayton head coach
Dennis Currier. "He is an excellent representative for the University of Dayton along with the Atlantic 10. It was extremely exciting to see him get drafted by FC Cincinnati since they are so close to us. Dayton has a very rich tradition of student-athletes who have moved onto the professional ranks and we are confident Jonas will do very well at the next level."
Last season, Fjeldberg earned Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year honors and team MVP after leading the conference in goals, points, shots, shots on goal, and game-winning goals. He chipped in nine assists, which was second in the A-10. The Norway native was First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-Region, and was three-time player of the week.
In his three years at Dayton, Fjeldberg has totaled 17 goals, 17 assists, 51 points, and nine career games in 52 career games.
